It is no surprise we love color in this household! Since we moved in, we’ve added pink walls, blue cabinets, colored backsplash and have found ways to add color in just about every room. But there was one area in our home that still didn’t feel right. In between all of the color downstairs and upstairs sat a pretty traditional staircase. It had wooden banisters, dark wood stairs, and traditional hardware.
I knew I wanted color (of course) and the perfect pop would be painting banisters. There were two main things I looked for when shopping for paint. First, durability. Something as high-touch as a handrail needs to stand the test of time. Second, wipe-ability! With little messy fingers, I wanted a paint that I could easily wipe clean. The Ovation Plus line by HGTV Home® by Sherwin-Williams available at Lowe’s checked both of those boxes and more.
There were so many colors to choose from, but after browsing the HGTV Home® by Sherwin-Williams 2022 Color Collection of the Year, I finally settled on Slate Tile (HGSW1472), and I’m so glad I did. It’s the perfect shade of blue grey to tie our kitchen and upstairs area together. The pop of color brightened the space so much and made the staircase seem so much more…us!
The next part of the project was adding a stair runner. A stair runner has been on my wish list since we moved in. Stair runners are great, not only because we have little feet scurrying around, but they add a layer of texture and warmth to a space. The Slate Tile paint was the inspiration for this stair runner.
And to finish off the project, I swapped out the hardware on the banister for brass to coordinate with the rest of the home.
I’m so in love with how this project turned out. What color would you paint your banister? For more inspiration check out these other home projects: primary bedroom makeover and playroom wet bar makeover!
