If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I LOVE color and crafts. That being said, I have craft supplies in literally every color of the rainbow but am storing them in a small craft closet right outside our playroom. Aside from storing all our crafts, this closet is also a catchall for games and random toys too! But now that Piper is super into arts and crafts, I decided to give this space a good facelift and make everything more organized and accessible.

How To Organize A Craft Closet – Tips and Tricks

1. Plan –  The first thing you need to do is take a moment and plan out your craft closet. Ask yourself, what kind of crafts do I do? How much storage space do I have? What pieces of furniture will I use and how can they be altered to hold the items that I want to store? Will I hang things on the wall or keep them on shelves?
2. Sort –  After you answer these questions, it is time to sort through all of your craft items. Separate them by type and color if possible. If the item has multiple functions (ex: some paintbrushes are great for doing more than just fine detailing) consider keeping them together in one stack or box even if they belong to different categories. Items that don’t belong should be thrown away, donated to Goodwill or some other local charity (always call ahead first!), or given to a friend. Some items can even be sold on Ebay or Craigslist if they are in like new condition!
3. Organize –  After you’ve sorted all of your craft supplies it is time to put them back into your craft closet. Keep like items together and consider putting them in color coded boxes if you have a lot of different types of supplies or items that don’t easily fit into a category. Use labels to help identify where different items go. Label shelves for easy access too!
4. Labeling is key while organizing your craft closet because it helps the next person going into the closet know exactly where to put things and it prevents you from having to go through your whole closet just to find that one missing item.
5. Categorize –   While labeling is great, it isn’t always enough. You can also categorize your craft items by placing all of the paint supplies together in one section of your closet and with art supplies in another section. This helps people going into the closet know exactly what they’re looking for just by a quick glance at a pile of items laying out on a table.
6. Store –  Keep the most used items in easy access and out on a table or desk where you can readily use them and look for new projects to do. Store any other supplies like glues, paints, or craft tools away in labeled boxes that fit into your craft closet shelves. Make sure everything has a place, but don’t stress too much if all of your closet shelves are not completely full. Remember, this is your craft closet so you can always buy or make more storage items to fill in any holes!

With these tips, you should have everything organized so that the next time you need an item it’s easy to find.

Craft Closet Revamp

I wanted to make it easier for Piper to access all the craft supplies in this closet. So, I decided that using things like Command hooks, a rolling cart, and acrylic storages bins would be the best way to go. Especially because these types of organization items make it extra easy to display and rearrange things as needed.

Here’s how I organized everything…

Scissors

Placed small wire hooks on the inside of the closet door and hung one pair of scissors on each hook.

Colorful Tape and Twine

I put all of my tape on a white dowel and then tied some baker’s twine to each end of the dowel and hung the twine from a command hook that I had placed on the inside of closet door just below the scissors. I then did the same thing for a large roll of baker’s twine that I had and hung it on a Command hook I had placed just above the scissors.

Paint Brushes and Rulers

Just like the scissors, tape, and twine, I also hung my paint brushes on the inside of our closet door. When it comes to small spaces, I’m all about maximizing as much of the usable space as possible. So if you too have a small closet that needs to be organized, don’t forget about using the inside of your closet door! On top of giving yourself more storage space, you can also display some of your things in a fun and decorative way!

Markers, Crayons, Glitter Glue, Etc.

I decided that using a tiered bar cart would be best for our most used items. Sticking with my goal of accessibility, I opted for a cart on wheels so Piper could easily pull the cart in an out. Then, I purchased clear acrylic storage bins, filled each one with a specific craft item, and then placed the bins on the cart. Doing this makes it super easy Piper to see everything and quickly get what she needs all on her own.

Cardstock

The back of our closet has a panel that I didn’t want people to see every time they opened the closet. So, I came up with idea of spacing out Command quarts spring clips hooks on it and then hanging colorful cardstock paper from each clip. Along with storing paper, this space in our closet also doubles up as an area where Piper can also hang her finished masterpieces! Which she absolutely loves!

Felt Garlands

I have a few felt garlands that Piper and I use for various crafts. Not wanting these to get tangled up, I decided to hang some medium size designer Command hooks on both side walls in our closet and hang the garlands there.

And that’s it! By choosing to use damage free products, I can change things up as Piper’s, and eventually Lila’s, interest evolve over the years. But for now, I love how easily Piper can grab and put away her supplies all on her own and let her creativity run wild!
